洋楽音楽との出合、それはサザンロック(Southern Rock )

サザンロックって何？

サザンロック(Southern Rock )とは「ウエストコーストサウンド」「カントリーロック」とか言われた、土臭い薫りのするロック・ミュージック・ジャンルの一つです。「ウエストコーストサウンド」は一般に繊細さがあり、「サザンロック」はさらに豪快さがある。良く音楽雑誌の紹介でサザンロックとは「オールマンブラザースバンド」「ザ・バンド」等を代表に.と解説されています。(自分はそうでは無いと想うところもあるのですが....）ではどんな条件がサザンロックなのでしょか？私流にまとめて見ました。バンドはそのほとんどが次の特徴を備え、次の特徴のうちのどれかが当てはまれば「サザンロック」である可能性が高いと判断できます。

さらに「***・バンド」の***部分が人の名前(例えば「ヘンリー・トーマス・バンド」の場合や地名がバンド名の場合、これはいける！と思うべし。 80％拡張識＝バンド、人名がバンド名になっている。

ジャケットのメンバーは5人以上でカーボーイスタイルやカーボーイハットをかぶっている！この場合もかなりの確率で「サザンロック」でしょう！。
(但し聞いてみるといきなりバンジョーとアコーステックギター＆バイオリンで「ニュー・カントリー」や「ブルースグラス」などのジャンルで、もろにカントリーの場合もありますが、この辺の編成をベースにドラムとＥ・ギターがクレジットされたバンドや、特にツインリードやトリプルリードギターのバンドの場合、超高確率でやはり「サザンロック」でしょう。

注意＞カーボーイスタイルとインディアンがジャケットいっぱいに、二人でニッコリ笑って写っている場合については、なぜか購入をためらってしまうのは私だけではないはずだ！。 80％ファツシヨン

最後にそのバンドのメンバーや活動のヒストリー(系図）に上記のバンドのメンバーと何らかの関係がある(例えば元メンバーとかゲスト出演しているとかプロディユースしていたり曲をカバーしたり提供したり....）
まあ、以上が「サザンロック」の条件ではないのでしょうか(本当はもっと説明したいのですが別の機会に....）。とにかくそんなことで私はアメリカの土臭い「サザンロック」音楽の虜となったのでした。

タワーレコードのカントリーコーナーでモロにカーボーイスタイルでカントリーシンガー風のジャケット姿のCDを購入聞いて見るとコミカルな「じゃじゃ馬億万長者」のバックに最適風な音楽であったり、ソロにもかかわらず、バックバンドがサザンロック風だったりと、まあいろいろたのしめます。 30％

極めは、その全てがミックスされたジャケットの場合これは99％が「サザンロック」です。

私はＬＰレコードとＣＤを含めてサザンロックだけでも200タイトル以上のアルバムを所有していますがこの条件ではずしたことは、1枚しかありません！。 (この一枚はちょっと聞くとパンクロックでした...？） 90％だれが見てもカントリー、西部劇のワンシーン

知的判断方法＝バンド名やメンバーを覚える(できるだけ）、すると他の候補に上がった怪しいレコードのクレジットのゲストミユージシャンの名前に覚えがあれば、何となくサウンドがわかってくるものである。

ちなみにゲストミーユジシャンの、ほとんどが私の場合そのアルバムの曲の質のアップの他に、販売促進や話題作りに重要と考えられるため「有名バンド」「有名ミユージシャン」「話題の人」などの名前がほとんどですので、私の様に英語がさっぱりの人間でも何とか目をこらして読もうとすると以外に記憶にある名前がクレジットされている場合があります。

せめてバンド名だけでも記憶していると違いますよ！。 90％バンド名を記憶する、メンバーを記憶する、曲名を記憶する

カントリー
country
カントリーミュージック country musicとはいったいなんだろう。
これを語らずしてSouthern Rock は語れない、やはり音楽なのでそれを言葉で説明するのは難しいが、逆に言葉で説明したほうが「何となく解る」こともあります。
実は日本ではちゃんと同等のジャンルが存在するのです「民謡」と一部の？「演歌」が該当します。

起源はアメリカ開拓歴とともに始まります。リズムのスピードは「馬が歩くスピード」と「馬が走るスピード」です。そして「初めに詩(歌詞の内容）」があり、それに定番の伴奏が付くというパターンです。演歌もそうでしょう？。

カントリーミュージックの代表的な詩の内容は「故郷、故郷を思い出す」とかというパターンがあります、演歌では千昌夫の「北国の春」なんかがそうです。
「～あの故郷に帰ろうかなぁ～」これはもう立派なカントリーです。
そういえば昔日本で、カントリーミュージックが詩の内容まで含めて思いっきりアメリカンしている曲が大ヒットしています「走れコータロー」です。
詩の内容が「明るくて」リズムスピードは「馬が走るスピード」でこれと「北国の春」の中間ぐらいが吉田拓郎の「結婚しようよ」です。
さて使われる楽器にもずいぶん特徴があります。
カントリー系の音楽には「バンジョー」「ハーモニカ」「バイオリン」「スチールギター」「ドブロギター」「マンドリン」がつかわれます。西部開拓時代から (現在でも開拓中なのかも？）伴奏楽器の花形はバイオリンだったようです、携帯性もいいし、弓の馬のシッポの毛もなんだか沢山ありそうだし...。
その次が「ギター」と「ハーモニカ」だった様です。
やがて1950年後半から「ギブソン」や「フエンダー」といつたメーカーの例のエレキギターが使われ初めましたが初めは、ロック色が少なく(自分がそう判断するだけかも）使われ方も柔らかにサラツと利用されていました。

さらに歌い方にも特徴があります。
その1裏声を良く使う。

何といってもこのバンドがサザンロックという音楽ジャンルをオールマン・ブラザーズ・バンドといっしょに作った(人々に呼ばれる様になった）主役です。元々サザンロックという言葉を彼等は自分たちで名乗ることはなく、音楽業界(視聴者を含む）が考え出した分類名ですが、オールマン・ブラザーズ・バンドがサザンブルースなのに対して、LYNYRD SKYNYRDはサザンロックという言葉の響がぴったりのバンドでした。
札幌の北海道大学に昔自分の好きなアマチュアバンドに「SECOND HELPING」という名前のバンドがあり私がこの手の音楽を聞くきっかけとなった重要なバンドでした。

Rick Medlocke リッグ・メドリックが結成したバンド。
1972年結成

Background of the Band

Blackfoot's roots began in the 1969 in Jacksonville, Florida when two bands, Fresh Garbage and Tangerine merged together to form Hammer. Unfortunately, the band was short lived and the members went their seperate ways.

Rick Medlocke , a tough street kid from Jacksonville then went and played with Lynyrd Skynyrd as the drummer on the album Skynyrd's First and ... Last after first offering to drive a truck or be a roadie to Ronnie Van Zant, the lead singer of Skynyrd. Rick played drums with Skynyrd for two years but began to miss fronting his own band so in the summer of 1972, Rick left Skynyrd and along with childhood friends, Jackson Spires, Charlie Hargret and bassist Lenny Stradler formed Blackfoot. Following a year of jamming in North Carolina, Greg T Walker replaced Stradler as the bassist and the band moved their headquarters to northern New Jersey.

For the next 8 years Blackfoot went from a little known band to one of the great southern rock bands of the late 1970's, culminating with the album Strikes. Unfortunately in 1984 the band split while touring and Rick was forced to buy the bands trademark name. For the next few years Blackfoot had many personnel changes but Rick, constant force behind the band, kept putting out great music that got much radio airplay.

Late in 1995 there was antother change in the line up. Mark Woerpel and Tim Stunson Left the band. So the search was on again. Rick found Two talented Players . First Is John Howsley on Lead guitar from Ann Arbor Mi. Formerly of Various bands,Ragedy Ann and others. Second is bassist Bryce Barnes from a band called Edwin Dare.

リンダ・ロンシュタット
ウエストコーストの歌姫といわれ、メキシコ近くで生まれる。
60年から70年代のカントリー界ではとにかく幅広い活躍をしてきたシンガーである。愛らしい？顔でホットパンツの姿が印象的だった。
現在でもほぼ1～2年に1回ニューアルバムをリリースしている。またスペイン語の歌も良く歌う。

First coming to prominence in the L.A. country-rock scene of late 1960's and early 1970's, singer Linda Ronstadt has made a career of showcasing her talents in an impressive number of musical arenas. In addition to her work in pop, she has recorded albums of country music, Mexican traditional music, light opera and American and Latin jazz standards.

Linda starred in the Broadway production of Pirates of Penzance in 1981 and also in the film, 1983. Off Broadway she appeared in La Boheme as Mimi, 1984. She has been the recipient of an American Music Award in 1978, the Academy of Country Music award, 1987 & 1988, and the Grammy in 1975, 1976, 1987, 1988 (with Emmylou Harris & Dolly Parton), 1989 (with Aaron Neville), 1990 (with Aaron Neville), and 1992. She won the 1988-1989 Emmy Award for outstanding individual performance in variety or music program for Canciones De Mi Padre.

ゲストミュージシャンやセッションミュージシャンとして評価が高い。

「ウエストコーストサウンド」

(西部＝アメリカ大陸の中央から西側）とか「カントリーロック」とか「サザンロック」と言われていますが。

日本で考える場合には、ご高齢の方々には(私の母親等に説明する場合...）「ウエスタン音楽」にエレキギターが入った音楽と解説したほうが理解が早いと思います。

私が「サザンロック」と言っているルーツは、やはり「カントリー」や「ブルーグラス」などから徐々に1960年台前半ごろからロックらしく変化して言ったということでしよう。

2	西部を中心に、南部と中部そしてメキシコ付近のエリアで「バーボン」と「ビール」の薫り、ブルースハーモニカ...の響か漂う。ずばり「サザンロック」です保証します。ツインギターにボトルネック奏法の音が聞こえてくるようです。(本人のいれ込みが激しい...）	70％	地域、地方、バーボンウイスキー、ブルースハーモニカなどの小道具、馬、サボテン、リボルバー、ライフル、荒野、へび？、酒場、スチールギター、ドブロギター、ボトルネック奏法、バンジョー
3	アーティスト名の最後に「*・バンド」とか「・・バンド」とバンドという名前がついた場合、これはもうかなりの高確率で「サザンロック」していますが、ブルース・グラス色がかなり強い場合もあります。さらに「・バンド」の**部分が人の名前(例えば「ヘンリー・トーマス・バンド」の場合や地名がバンド名の場合、これはいける！と思うべし。	80％	拡張識＝バンド、人名がバンド名になっている。バンド名が地域名である。例えば(テキサス・ハドソン・バンド）
4	ジャケットのメンバーは5人以上でカーボーイスタイルやカーボーイハットをかぶっている！この場合もかなりの確率で「サザンロック」でしょう！。 (但し聞いてみるといきなりバンジョーとアコーステックギター＆バイオリンで「ニュー・カントリー」や「ブルースグラス」などのジャンルで、もろにカントリーの場合もありますが、この辺の編成をベースにドラムとＥ・ギターがクレジットされたバンドや、特にツインリードやトリプルリードギターのバンドの場合、超高確率でやはり「サザンロック」でしょう。注意＞カーボーイスタイルとインディアンがジャケットいっぱいに、二人でニッコリ笑って写っている場合については、なぜか購入をためらってしまうのは私だけではないはずだ！。	80％	ファツシヨンへび革のブーツカーボーイフアッション
5	最後にそのバンドのメンバーや活動のヒストリー(系図）に上記のバンドのメンバーと何らかの関係がある(例えば元メンバーとかゲスト出演しているとかプロディユースしていたり曲をカバーしたり提供したり....）まあ、以上が「サザンロック」の条件ではないのでしょうか(本当はもっと説明したいのですが別の機会に....）。とにかくそんなことで私はアメリカの土臭い「サザンロック」音楽の虜となったのでした。タワーレコードのカントリーコーナーでモロにカーボーイスタイルでカントリーシンガー風のジャケット姿のCDを購入聞いて見るとコミカルな「じゃじゃ馬億万長者」のバックに最適風な音楽であったり、ソロにもかかわらず、バックバンドがサザンロック風だったりと、まあいろいろたのしめます。	30％大穴	ゲスト出演参加、曲の提供、バンド系、ルーツ、元？？？？バンドのメンバー、
6	極めは、その全てがミックスされたジャケットの場合これは99％が「サザンロック」です。私はＬＰレコードとＣＤを含めてサザンロックだけでも200タイトル以上のアルバムを所有していますがこの条件ではずしたことは、1枚しかありません！。 (この一枚はちょっと聞くとパンクロックでした...？）	90％	だれが見てもカントリー、西部劇のワンシーン
7	知的判断方法＝バンド名やメンバーを覚える(できるだけ）、すると他の候補に上がった怪しいレコードのクレジットのゲストミユージシャンの名前に覚えがあれば、何となくサウンドがわかってくるものである。ちなみにゲストミーユジシャンの、ほとんどが私の場合そのアルバムの曲の質のアップの他に、販売促進や話題作りに重要と考えられるため「有名バンド」「有名ミユージシャン」「話題の人」などの名前がほとんどですので、私の様に英語がさっぱりの人間でも何とか目をこらして読もうとすると以外に記憶にある名前がクレジットされている場合があります。せめてバンド名だけでも記憶していると違いますよ！。	90％	バンド名を記憶する、メンバーを記憶する、曲名を記憶する

用語	解説	資料
カントリー country	カントリーミュージック country musicとはいったいなんだろう。これを語らずしてSouthern Rock は語れない、やはり音楽なのでそれを言葉で説明するのは難しいが、逆に言葉で説明したほうが「何となく解る」こともあります。実は日本ではちゃんと同等のジャンルが存在するのです「民謡」と一部の？「演歌」が該当します。起源はアメリカ開拓歴とともに始まります。リズムのスピードは「馬が歩くスピード」と「馬が走るスピード」です。そして「初めに詩(歌詞の内容）」があり、それに定番の伴奏が付くというパターンです。演歌もそうでしょう？。カントリーミュージックの代表的な詩の内容は「故郷、故郷を思い出す」とかというパターンがあります、演歌では千昌夫の「北国の春」なんかがそうです。「～あの故郷に帰ろうかなぁ～」これはもう立派なカントリーです。そういえば昔日本で、カントリーミュージックが詩の内容まで含めて思いっきりアメリカンしている曲が大ヒットしています「走れコータロー」です。詩の内容が「明るくて」リズムスピードは「馬が走るスピード」でこれと「北国の春」の中間ぐらいが吉田拓郎の「結婚しようよ」です。さて使われる楽器にもずいぶん特徴があります。カントリー系の音楽には「バンジョー」「ハーモニカ」「バイオリン」「スチールギター」「ドブロギター」「マンドリン」がつかわれます。西部開拓時代から (現在でも開拓中なのかも？）伴奏楽器の花形はバイオリンだったようです、携帯性もいいし、弓の馬のシッポの毛もなんだか沢山ありそうだし...。その次が「ギター」と「ハーモニカ」だった様です。やがて1950年後半から「ギブソン」や「フエンダー」といつたメーカーの例のエレキギターが使われ初めましたが初めは、ロック色が少なく(自分がそう判断するだけかも）使われ方も柔らかにサラツと利用されていました。さらに歌い方にも特徴があります。その1裏声を良く使う。その2かけ声を良く使う。西部劇でよくカーボーイが牛を追い込むのに「ウーッ・ヤッホー」や馬にまたがり「ハっ」「ハーッ」などや「ヘイッ」などである。	1: カントリーアンドウエスタン country and western 2: カントリーウエア country wear 3: カントリークラブ country club 4: カントリーミュージック country music 5: カントリーリスク country risk 6: ウエスタン Western 7: ウエスタンミュージック Western music 8: ブルーグラス blueglass 9: ウエストコースト West Coast 10: サザン南国 (なんこく） Nankoku (pl), southern countries 11: southern 【南半球】 southern hemisphere
